Terrestrial Caves

Grotta di Matermania

On the South-Eastern side of the Island you can see another fascinating grotto, which the Romans turned into a Nymphaeum, despite its existence is witnessed by only a few wall fragments.

The cave was used for the rituals in honour of the goddess Cybele, also known as “Mater Magna”, hence the name “Matermania”

. Yet, there is a current of thought which refers to the cult of the god Mithras, for the finding of some bas-reliefs _hence the term “Mitromania”, then turned into “Matromania”.

The Cave is of limestone origin and, similarly to others, it seems to have been the product of the progressive water erosion. You can easily reach the spot by walking along the Pizzolungo pathway: a long flight of steps that you can find on your right, before reaching the “Natural Arch”, near “Le Grottelle” Restaurant.
