Terrestrial Caves

Grotta della Paglia

This Cave, unknown to most people, is visible in the shape of a big gap on the rocky area between Tamborio and Sementella. The access to it starts just before getting to the Natural Arch and looks like a very steep path, not accessible to many. Its southern exposure makes of it a very dry cave, that’s why the etymology of the name seems to derive from an old place used to dry hay. Yet, its impervious location gives little credibility to this hypothesis.

On the other hand, the discovery of ferrous sediments, suggests that the name may have originated from its peculiar reddish and progressively straw colour.

Who is lucky enough to get to this grotto, will be completely stunned by the beauty of all its elements: the rumble of the sea waves that catches you behind, the roar of the wind that shakes the rocky hilly walls, the darting of seagulls, guardians of one of their dwellings, and the divine perfume of myrtle mixed with rosemary.
