Torre Della Guardia

The Watchtower is located in the south-west of the island, just above Punta Carena. Completed towards the end of the 15th century, it served as a fortress on this western side against the numerous invasions of the Saracens. Later, it was used by the British and French forces during the Napoleonic wars, precisely for this reason some cannons are still visible today.

Only at the end of the nineteenth century, the property consisting of the tower and barracks, passed into the hands of the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe. The Swedish writer stayed for long periods of his stay in this place which he considered more suitable to study and writing.

Munthe later sold her to the Baroness von Uexkull, a friend and translator of her works into German.
