Cave of Matermania

On the south-eastern side of the island we find this other charming cave, once transformed into a Roman nymphaeum, although today only a few wall remains are visible.

Here they celebrated rites in honor of the goddess Cybele, known as Mater Magna, from here then the name.

Other currents of thought instead make reference to the cult of the God Mitra, for the finding of some bas-reliefs and from here, then, the term Mitromania turned into Matromania.
The nature of the cave is of calcareous origin and it seems to be also result of the erosion of the waters that gradually have contributed to the creation of the cavity. The cave can be easily visited by taking the path of Pizzolungo, a series of steps that begin before arriving at the ‘Arco Naturale’, near the restaurant Le Grottelle.
