Cave of Arsenal

The Grotta dell’Arsenale is located below the Gardens of Augustus just 8 meters above sea level. The name itself makes us understand that it must have always been used as storage and repairs of boats in the Roman period until the Second World War.

Thanks to excavations carried out in the early twentieth century, it has been known that the cave was used in the past as a Roman nymphaeum for the performance of religious rites in the Tiberian era.

At the bottom of the cave, on the right side, there is a brick coating that suggests the presence of a tank used to collect water from a natural source.
