The former Cathedral of Santo Stefano is the main church of the town of Capri. It is located right at the top of the stairs of the famous Piazzetta. The building was designed by the Neapolitan architect Francesco Antonio Picchiatti (already author of some works in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore in Naples) to recover the ancient Benedictine convent of ‘500 and built between 1688 and 1695 by the master martial Aniello Desiderio.

One of the most important aesthetic features of the former St Stephen’s Cathedral concerns the domes and vaults of the side chapels that enhance the baroque style of the church.

The interior of the church is a Latin cross, with the opening on the side aisles of small chapels with reliquaries, one of these, at the side of the altar guards the tombs of Giacomo and Vincenzo Arcucci. Giacomo was the founder of the Certosa di San Giacomo in fact the tomb reproduces the aristocrat Giacomo with the project of the Certosa.

In addition, some sections of the floor have been made with marble recovered from the excavations of Villa Jovis, one of the 12 villas built by the emperor Tiberius on Capri. Inside the former cathedral of Santo Stefano is the statue of San Costanzo, protector of the island of Capri.
