The Okhmatdyt Pediatric Hospital in Kyiv, with which Soleterre has been collaborating since 2018, was scheduled for renovation in the upcoming months. An expansion of one of the wings was planned, and we at Soleterre, along with our local partner Zaporuka Foundation, were set to manage the project.
In these hours, while there is much debate over the responsibilities of the Russians, and the value of victims in Kyiv compared to those in Sevastopol or Gaza, whether a military meeting was taking place or soldiers wounded at the front were being treated, we are there, facing yet another violation of humanitarian law. We are there managing the constant alerts for attacks and the lack of electricity for 4 hours a day, trying to coordinate aid as best as possible, and supporting our local partners in leading the response.
Yesterday, July 8, the news that no one ever wanted to hear: Russian missiles launched on Ukraine struck the “Okhmatdyt” pediatric hospital in Kyiv, where children with cancer were being treated.
Soleterre has been present in Ukraine for over twenty years and has been collaborating with the Okhmatdyt pediatric hospital since 2018. Yesterday, we evacuated 35 small oncology patients who found refuge at the Kyiv Dacha, the reception house for children with cancer and their families. At 9 p.m. yesterday evening, those undergoing chemotherapy treatments received life-saving therapies, which cannot be interrupted under any circumstances.
In the coming hours, we will activate psychological support and provide specialized treatment for those who have suffered injuries and trauma. Immediate supplies of medicines and drugs are needed, as entire dispensaries were lost in the attack.
Continuing to hope under bombs is difficult, but it is the only way to continue winning humanity.
“It is unacceptable to target a hospital: humanitarian spaces must be protected at all costs. Together with our local partner, Zaporuka Foundation, we are transferring our patients to other safer facilities; the priority right now is to treat the wounded and not interrupt ongoing treatments. We urgently need everyone’s help to purchase the medicines lost in the attack,” said Damiano Rizzi, President of Soleterre.
