Paolo Sorrentino with “Parthenope”, the film shot between Naples and Capri (in the photo one of the moments of shooting at the Gardens of Augustus), is the only Italian in competition at Cannes 2024. The president of the Cannes Film Festival, Iris Knobloch, and the general delegate, Thierry Frémaux, have recently announced the programme for the 77th edition of the French festival, which will take place on the Croisette from 14 to 25 May.
‘Parthenope’ by Paolo Sorrentino tells, in the words of the director Oscar Award, “the long journey of the life of Parthenope, from 1950, when he was born, until today. An epic of the feminine without heroism, but inhabited by the inexorable passion for freedom, for Naples and the unpredictable faces of love. The true, the useless and the unspeakable ones that condemn you to pain. And then they make you start again. The perfect summer of Capri, as boys, wrapped in carelessness. And the ambush of the end. The youth have this in common: brevity”.
“And then – continues the director – all the others, the Neapolitans, lived, observed, loved, men and women, disillusioned and vital, their melancholy drifts, tragic ironies, a little ‘down eyes, impatience, The loss of hope to be able to laugh once again for a distinguished man who stumbles and falls in a street in the center. Life can be very long, memorable or ordinary. The passage of time gives all the repertoire of feelings. And there, near and far, this indefinable city, Naples, that charms, enchants, screams, laughs and then knows how to hurt you”.
