Chiesa di
San Costanzo

The church of San Costanzo is one of the oldest in Capri and is located in the seaside village of Marina Grande, and is dedicated to the cult of the patron Costanzo and that of the Madonna della Libera. Originally named after San Severino, only after the death of San Costanzo, in the seventh century, did it take the name.

In 987 it was erected as a bishopric of Capri. It has undergone various extensions including the raising of the rectory in 1928.The portal dates back to the fourteenth century, and is dominated by the coat of arms of the Angevins.

It was built during the fifth century on the ruins of a Roman Palace dating back to the Ancient-Republican period. Indeed, on the latest restoration in 1990, a Roman floor and a wall in brick were brought back to their splendour. The architecture of the Church recalls the typical Byzantine features, with Greek cross plan and dome vaults.

Only in the fourteenth century, by the will of Count Giacomo Arcucci, were the pronaos and the presbytery added.
