In Anacapri, at 412 meters above sea level on the side of Mount Solaro, stands the Castle of Barbarossa, so called because of the Ottoman corsair Khayr al-Din, known as Barbarossa, who conquered it in 1535. From above of this construction you are immersed in the vastness of a wild and enchanting nature.
Used in the early nineteenth century as a military base by both the British and the French, it was then purchased in 1898 by the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe who, given his love for nature and animals, transformed it into a refuge for birds by fighting against the local hunting. Today the fortress has in fact been transformed into an international ornithological station for the study of migratory birds and the monitoring of their movements.
