Castello Barbarossa

In Anacapri, 412 meters above sea level on a side of Mount Solaro, stands the Castle of Barbarossa, so called because of the Ottoman corsair Khayr al-Din, known as Barbarossa, who captured it in 1535. From the top of this building you are immersed in the vastness of a wild and enchanting nature.

In the summer, every Thursday you can take part in guided tours with a visit to the ornithological station.

Used in the early nineteenth century as a military base by both the British and the French, it was then purchased in 1898 by the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe who, given his love for nature and animals, turned it into a bird sanctuary fighting against local hunting. Today, the Rock has been transformed into an international ornithological station for the study of migratory birds and monitoring their movements.
